Chinese Zodiac Elements

The five elements are the second layer of the Chinese zodiac. They explain why two people with the same animal can carry different year labels.

Ask someone their Chinese zodiac sign and they will usually name an animal. Ask a practitioner and they will ask for more: the year's heavenly stem, the element it carries, the month, the day and the hour. The five elements — Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal and Water — are the layer that turns a 12-year animal loop into a 60-year cycle.

Short answer: every Chinese year has an animal and a heavenly stem. The stem supplies one of five elements and a yin or yang quality. 2026 is Bing Wu (丙午), a yang fire year. 2027 is Ding Wei (丁未), a yin fire year. Your animal also has a fixed element, which is a separate association.

Two layers: animal element and year element

This distinction is often blurred in English-language summaries. Each animal has a fixed element that never changes: the Rat is Water, the Tiger is Wood, the Horse is Fire, and so on. But each year also has an element from its heavenly stem. A Horse born in 2014 (Jia Wu, yang wood) has the Horse's fixed fire element and a wood year element. A Horse born in 2026 (Bing Wu, yang fire) has fire in both layers.

The fixed element is a classification of the animal, not a personality verdict. Popular writing often blends the two layers without saying so.

The ten heavenly stems

The ten stems (天干, tiāngān) form a separate cycle from the 12 branches. Each stem is either yang or yin and belongs to one element. The sequence runs Jia, Yi, Bing, Ding, Wu, Ji, Geng, Xin, Ren, Gui. Because 10 and 12 share a factor of 2, the pairing repeats only after 60 years.

The same stem recurs every 10 years, but the animal changes, so the full stem–branch label recurs every 60.

How to find your element

The quick route is the last digit of your birth year, adjusted for the Chinese New Year boundary:

  • Year ending in 4 or 5: Wood
  • Year ending in 6 or 7: Fire
  • Year ending in 8 or 9: Earth
  • Year ending in 0 or 1: Metal
  • Year ending in 2 or 3: Water

This works because the stems repeat in a fixed ten-year pattern. But if you were born before Chinese New Year, use the previous year. The calculator returns the exact lunar year, element, stem and branch.

Generating and overcoming: the two cycles

The elements are not static categories. Traditional thought describes two main relationships. In the generating cycle, each element nourishes the next: Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth (ash), Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood. In the overcoming cycle, each element controls another: Wood parts Earth, Earth absorbs Water, Water extinguishes Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood.

These relationships are used in feng shui, traditional medicine and astrology as a language of balance. They are analogies drawn from the behavior of materials, not empirical claims about chemistry or health. Treat the system as a cultural model with its own logic, not as a diagnostic tool.

What the elements do not tell you

A year element is one data point in a system that traditionally also uses month, day, hour and the relationships among all of them. It cannot tell you whether a person is kind, healthy, employable or compatible with you. The most useful way to read it is as a cultural vocabulary for qualities and cycles — not a hidden scorecard.

Common questions

What is my Chinese zodiac element?

Use your birth year and the ten-stem table. The element of the year stem is your “year element.” For example, 2026 is Bing Wu: Bing is yang fire, so people born in the 2026 Horse year carry a fire year element. Your animal also has a fixed element, which is a separate layer.

What is the element for 2026?

2026 is a Fire year, specifically yang fire. Its stem–branch name is Bing Wu (丙午). The year element is fire; the Horse's fixed element is also fire, so the two layers agree in 2026.

What is the element for 2027?

2027 is a Yin Fire year, Ding Wei (丁未). The year element is fire; the Goat's fixed element is earth. In popular usage it is still a Fire Goat year, but the two layers are different.

How do the five elements interact?

The traditional generating cycle is Wood feeds Fire, Fire creates Earth, Earth bears Metal, Metal carries Water, and Water nourishes Wood. The overcoming cycle is Wood parts Earth, Earth absorbs Water, Water extinguishes Fire, Fire melts Metal, and Metal cuts Wood. These are relational metaphors, not chemistry.

Why are there five elements but ten heavenly stems?

Each element appears in a yang and a yin version, which gives ten stems: Jia and Yi (Wood), Bing and Ding (Fire), Wu and Ji (Earth), Geng and Xin (Metal), Ren and Gui (Water). The stems take turns year by year.

Is the five-element personality system scientific?

No. Wu Xing is a classical Chinese philosophical framework used across medicine, feng shui, astrology and martial arts. It is culturally important and internally sophisticated, but it is not a validated personality or medical test. Do not use it to diagnose illness or make irreversible decisions.
